My fascination with painting
started in early childhood and I have worked with paint and
related materials ever since. I was born and educated in
Wales; trained as a teacher at Fishponds, Bristol; and, once
my children started school, I took a degree in Fine Art at
Aberystwyth University; following which I taught art to A
level in Wales and Australia. During my Art degree I was
strongly influenced by the work of the Head of Department,
David Tinker, who introduced me to the work of hard-edged
colourists such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely. This
strong emphasis on the use of colour has continued
throughout my painting. Living in Australia for five years
consolidated the use of intense light and its effect on form
and texture.
Since returning to Britain I
have participated for several years in a fine art workshop
in Corsham and this has led to more experimentation with
media and to a more abstract form of work. The Wiltshire
landscape has played an influence on my work; natural forms
of trees, hedges and water all appear in some form. The
play of colour is exciting and important in all my work.
I have exhibited in
Australia, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bath, Wales, and the
Mall Galleries, London. In addition to my UK sales, my work
has sold internationally in: Australia, Barbados, The
Netherlands, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Singapore, as well as
commissioned work in France.
